This beautiful and boho town on Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula is a magnet for A-listers - and it's not hard to see why. There’s knockout warm seas, barefoot chic beachside bars, and the freshest of seafood and zesty Mexican tacos. And if you really want to follow the jet set, head to Papaya Playa, a pop up hotel that decided to stay popped up, whose dreamy beach plays host to the occasional Victoria Secrets photo shoot. If you're looking for flirty action beneath endless sunshine, you can't go wrong with these three tiny castaway isles - favourites along the banana backpacker trail. For late night raves and magic mushroom shakes there's Gili Trawangan - whose waters teem with turtles and kaleidoscopic fish - while Gili Meno is all about long languid lunches and romantic trysts beneath a sweep of stars. Gili Air, meanwhile, has arguably the best beaches of the trio with a burgeoning nightlife scene.

Looking for cosmopolitan cool? Arty types have been heading to this buzzing beachside enclave for decades; the pretty port town on the Atlantic coast was a hippie hotspot during the sixties, with the likes of Jimi Hendrix and Cat Stevens hunkering down here. Pull up a pew in one of its many music haunts, stroll it's medina for some exotic shopping and book yourself into one of its chic hotels - with the scent of spice hanging heavily in the air, this captivating town will set the scene for a seriously steamy escape.
